Snowglobes

snowglobe-1asnowglobe-1b

WHILE holiday shopping last Christmas, I came across an interesting item. It was a little kit for building your own snowglobes. It came with supplies for making three different ones. As soon as I saw the kit, I thought those globes just begged to be filled with snowy LEGO scenes.

The first globe I built contained a Santa carrying his bag of toys. A small tree is in there too, with a yellow shiny star on top. One gift sits in the snow in the foreground. Once this globe was filled with water, I realized that the visual distortion of items close to the top of the globe was more extreme than I had expected. For my next attempt I would keep the LEGO low to the bottom, reducing distortion and allowing for more room above the scene for snow to fall.

This second snowglobe is not so specific to the Christmas holiday. It contains a miniature farm scene. A barn with a pile of hay out front, a silo and a tree are all built on a green landscape behind a grey fence.
